Chef Jason Gehring
At Astro, we satisfy your inner cravings for two all-American favorites: fried chicken and doughnuts. Call it an astronomical clash of two iconic comfort food classics, exploding on the DC scene together. Our chicken and doughnuts are prepared daily and on-site by our fry master, Chef Jason Gehring. Chef comes to Astro with some stellar experience, having cooked in kitchens like Fiola and Poste Moderne Brasserie in Washington, DC, The Charleston in Baltimore and the world renowned François Payard Bakery in New York City. While he honed his pastry craft in restaurant kitchens, you can thank his grandmother, whose fried chicken recipe has been perfected for your pleasure at Astro. Expect an artful and whimsical touch to Astro’s daily rotation of doughnut flavors with nostalgic flavors like peanut butter and jelly or dessert-inspired renditions like crème brulee. Count on classic buttermilk fried chicken (thanks Grandma Gehring), but Chef gives a nod to spice with a Sriracha blend, too.
Astro is the brainchild of longtime friends and native Washingtonians, Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern. The duo grew up playing hockey together (you may even know one if you follow the NHL), and their reward of choice after hockey games was a good old-fashioned doughnut. They are as excited as you are to share their love for fried chicken and doughnuts with Washingtonians.
